The 2026 FIFA World Cup will kick off at the historic Estadio Azteca in Mexico City, where co-hosts Mexico face South Africa in the opening Group A match.

The match marks a repeat of the 2010 World Cup opener between the two nations, which ended in a 1-1 draw in Johannesburg. This time, Mexico enter as strong favourites, backed by home advantage, higher FIFA ranking, and an unbeaten run in their last eight matches.

South Africa, however, arrive as underdogs but with belief. They are returning to the World Cup after a 16-year absence and will be making only their fourth appearance at the tournament. Coach Hugo Broos has urged discipline and focus as they aim to frustrate the hosts.

Mexico are expected to rely on experienced stars such as Guillermo Ochoa and striker Raúl Jiménez, while South Africa will look to players like Ronwen Williams and Lyle Foster to make an impact.

The tournament opener will also feature a major opening ceremony headlined by global music stars including Shakira, J Balvin, and Tyla, with over 80,000 fans expected at the stadium.

This match also opens a historic World Cup edition featuring 48 teams, 104 matches, and games hosted across the United States, Mexico, and Canada.

Kickoff promises a high-energy start to the biggest World Cup in history.
