Panama defender Jiovany Ramos has described Ghana as a “very strong and aggressive” side ahead of their opening Group L match at the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Wednesday in Toronto.

Speaking before training, Ramos stressed the need for discipline and tactical organization if Panama are to get a positive result against the Black Stars.

“Ghana is a very strong, aggressive team, but we have to play our game, stay focused, well-positioned, with compact lines, because we know that at any moment our goal can come,” Ramos said.

The 28-year-old also reflected on his journey to the World Cup, revealing how a difficult spell in his career inspired him to work harder and earn a place in Panama’s squad.

“Everything in life happens for a reason. I had a bit of a slump, I went back to Panama, and after that, I decided to work harder because I knew what was coming. I told myself I had to work twice as hard to achieve it and I did.”

Having scored twice in Panama’s last four matches, Ramos is now focused on making the most of his opportunity on the world stage.

“Now I want to have a good World Cup so that I can have good things in life,” he added.

Panama head into the tournament in confident mood after a productive training camp in Canada and will be aiming for a strong start against Ghana.
