Pickford commends Ghana’s resilience after World CUP stalemate

England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford has praised Ghana’s disciplined approach after the Black Stars held the Three Lions to a goalless draw in their 2026 FIFA World Cup Group L encounter at Boston Stadium.

Despite dominating possession and controlling much of the game, England found it difficult to break down a well-organised Ghana side that remained compact and resolute throughout the contest. The European side enjoyed 79 percent of possession, the highest by a team that failed to score in a World Cup match in more than six decades, yet they were unable to find a breakthrough.

Speaking after the match, Pickford acknowledged the quality of Ghana’s performance and the challenge posed by the Black Stars.

“They played a good game, but we have got to be happy. We’re still top of the group, now focus on Panama and top the group. Ghana have players like Semenyo, so you have to be ready to be called upon, and that’s what I felt I did,” the Everton shot-stopper said.

Although England entered the match seeking all three points, Pickford stressed that avoiding defeat remains important in tournament football and believes his side still controls its destiny in the group.

“We would’ve loved to win the game, but we have not lost. It’s tournament football, and still in our hands to top the group. You play different teams every game, and we just needed that goal; it’s as simple as that. We limited them to so few chances,” he stated.

Reflecting on England’s inability to convert their dominance into goals, the goalkeeper admitted that the final touch was missing.

“We never managed to get that goal, but that’s football,” Pickford added.

The result leaves Ghana and England tied on four points at the summit of Group L ahead of the final round of matches. England will face Panama in their last group fixture, while Ghana prepare for a crucial showdown against Croatia as both teams chase a place in the knockout stages.
