Spain’s relentless march through the 2026 FIFA World Cup group stage will be tested on Thursday when they meet Austria in a Round of 32 showdown at SoFi Stadium, with a place in the last 16—and a potential blockbuster tie against Portugal or Croatia—on the line.

The reigning European champions have yet to concede a goal in the tournament, while Austria arrive with momentum and belief after a dramatic finish to their group campaign secured knockout qualification.

Match Preview

Spain national football team head into the knockout rounds in formidable form, finishing top of Group H with seven points from nine and maintaining a perfect defensive record.

Luis de la Fuente’s side recovered from an opening draw with Cape Verde to record consecutive wins, including a narrow 1-0 victory over Uruguay on the final matchday courtesy of Álex Baena’s decisive strike. Beyond the results, Spain’s defensive dominance has been striking—they have not conceded a single shot on target in the first half across the tournament and remain unbeaten in 34 matches in all competitions.

With their structure, control, and depth, La Roja are once again being tipped as serious contenders for the World Cup crown.

Their opponents, Austria national football team, arrive after a dramatic and hard-fought group-stage campaign that saw them finish second in Group J behind Argentina.

Ralf Rangnick’s side nearly saw their campaign end in heartbreak, but a stoppage-time equaliser from Sasa Kalajdzic rescued a 3-3 draw against Algeria to secure progression on goal difference. That result not only confirmed their place in the Round of 32 but also marked a historic moment, as Austria became the first team to avoid defeat after conceding a second-half stoppage-time goal in a World Cup match.

Austria now enter the knockout stage for the first time in decades, bringing renewed belief but also questions over their defensive stability.

Team News

Spain are dealing with several attacking injury concerns, with Nico Williams, Yeremy Pino, and Víctor Muñoz all doubts. Despite that, Álex Baena is expected to keep his place after scoring the winner against Uruguay.

The midfield remains a key selection battle, with Rodri, Pedri, and Mikel Merino expected to feature, although Fabián Ruiz, Dani Olmo, and Gavi remain strong alternatives.

Austria report a relatively clean bill of health, although David Alaba and Marko Arnautović are being monitored after picking up knocks in their previous match. Both are expected to be fit enough to start, with Rangnick likely to stick with his experienced core.

Predicted Lineups

Spain: Simón; Llorente, Cubarsí, Laporte, Cucurella; Rodri, Merino, Pedri; Yamal, Oyarzabal, Baena

Austria: A. Schlager; Posch, Lienhart, Alaba, Mwene; Seiwald, X. Schlager; Laimer, Sabitzer, Schmid; Arnautović

Head-to-Head & Tactical View

Spain have historically dominated this fixture, with Austria’s last victory over La Roja coming in a 1990 friendly. Their most recent competitive meeting in 2009 ended in a comprehensive Spanish win.

Tactically, Spain will look to control possession through Rodri and Pedri, while Austria aim to disrupt rhythm and counter through Laimer, Sabitzer, and Arnautović. However, Austria’s defensive record in recent tournaments remains a concern.

Prediction

Austria’s resilience and late-game heroics have been impressive, but Spain’s control, defensive record, and consistency make them overwhelming favourites.

Prediction: Spain 2-0 Austria
