Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz says Ghana is fully prepared for the biggest test of its FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign, insisting that the tournament truly begins with the knockout stage as his side gears up to face Colombia in the Round of 32.
Speaking at a pre-match press conference ahead of Saturday’s encounter at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, the experienced Portuguese coach expressed confidence in his team’s readiness and drew on his vast experience in World Cup knockout football.
“I’m fully ready. I have been in this situation [knockout football] a couple of times,” Queiroz said.
He stressed the significance of the upcoming fixture, adding:
“The real World Cup starts now. These are the games that count and matter.”
Queiroz, who replaced Otto Addo as Ghana’s head coach in April 2026, has managed at four FIFA World Cups with Portugal, Iran and Egypt. His wealth of experience is expected to play a key role as the Black Stars seek to reach the Round of 16 for the first time since their memorable 2010 campaign.
Since taking charge, the 73-year-old has transformed Ghana into a disciplined and tactically organised side. The Black Stars conceded only two goals during the group stage, highlighting the team’s improved defensive solidity heading into the knockout rounds.
However, Ghana faces a daunting challenge against an unbeaten Colombian side that topped Group K. Colombia boasts an exciting attacking lineup and will be determined to continue its impressive run in the tournament.
Despite the challenge, Queiroz remains focused and has urged his players to put the group-stage performances behind them, reminding them that every knockout match presents a fresh opportunity to make history.
The Round of 32 encounter between Ghana and Colombia is scheduled to kick off at 01:30 GMT on Saturday, July 4, with a place in the Round of 16 at stake.
