Defending champions Argentina booked their place in the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after edging Cape Verde 3-2 in a thrilling Round of 32 clash at Miami Stadium in Florida, United States.

The South American side had to battle hard against the tournament debutants, who twice fought back to level the score before Argentina finally secured victory in extra time.

Lionel Messi, making his return after being rested for Argentina’s previous match, opened the scoring and continued his impressive form at the tournament. The goal also moved the 39-year-old back to the top of the Golden Boot race after scoring in his eighth straight World Cup match.

Cape Verde refused to give up and produced an inspired performance. They equalised twice, with Lopes Cabral scoring a stunning curling strike in extra time that is already being talked about as one of the best goals of the tournament.

Just when penalties seemed likely, Messi delivered a dangerous corner that led to Cristian Romero’s winning goal in the 114th minute, helping Argentina seal a dramatic 3-2 victory.

Despite the defeat, Cape Verde earned praise for their fearless display against the defending champions. The African nation ends its first-ever World Cup campaign with pride after exceeding expectations and winning admiration from football fans around the world.

Argentina now advances to the Round of 16, keeping alive their hopes of defending the FIFA World Cup title.
