Black Stars defender Alexander Djiku has admitted Ghana’s recent failures at major tournaments have been painful, calling on the team to put past disappointments behind them and focus on building a brighter future.
Ghana remains one of Africa’s most successful football nations, having won the Africa Cup of Nations four times and established a proud tradition of competing deep into major tournaments.
In recent years, however, the Black Stars have struggled to live up to those lofty expectations, suffering successive group-stage exits at the AFCON and leaving fans yearning for a return to the glory days.
Djiku, who has been a mainstay in Ghana’s defence, acknowledged that the team’s inability to progress beyond the first round has been particularly frustrating given the country’s rich football history.
“You know, I feel very good because also, you know, the Black Stars have four stars; we won a lot of African Cups, so it’s a strong country. When I saw Black Stars in the past, they all the time go final, semi-final. So I was a little bit angry that we could not get past the group stage,” Djiku said.
Despite the setbacks, the Fenerbahçe centre-back believes Ghana must now shift its attention to the future rather than dwell on previous disappointments.
“I was there in the last two African Cups, but now it’s far. We have to move forward and see what we can do in the next World Cup,” he added.
Djiku stressed that restoring the Black Stars to their former heights will require togetherness, resilience and a collective desire to succeed. He believes a blend of experienced leaders and emerging talents can help Ghana reclaim its place among Africa’s elite and compete strongly on the global stage.
