Former Ghana head coach Otto Addo has spoken publicly about his dismissal from the Black Stars for the first time, revealing that more than three months after his departure, he is still unaware of the reason behind the Ghana Football Association’s decision to end his tenure.
Speaking on the Fußball, mein Leben podcast, the 51-year-old admitted he never received an official explanation for his dismissal and chose not to seek one.
“Honestly, I still haven’t been given a reason [for my sacking] to this day – and honestly, I didn’t ask either,” Addo said.
The former Borussia Dortmund assistant reflected on his two-year spell in charge of the Black Stars, describing his relationship with the Ghana Football Association as one that involved constant discussions with the leadership.
“I was in Ghana for two years as coach. There was, of course, a lot of back-and-forth between me, our federation president, and the board as well. It just felt like I could have been sacked after just one month,” he added via 11 Freunde.
Addo was relieved of his duties by the Ghana Football Association in March 2026, just 72 days before the start of the FIFA World Cup, following a 2-1 international friendly defeat to Germany. The decision came despite the coach guiding Ghana to qualification for a fifth FIFA World Cup, becoming the first coach to lead the Black Stars to two separate World Cup finals after previously qualifying the team for Qatar 2022.
His second spell in charge produced mixed results. Ghana failed to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, but Addo steadied the team during the World Cup qualifiers, helping the Black Stars finish top of their qualifying group and secure a place at the expanded 2026 World Cup before his departure. During his second tenure, he recorded eight wins, five draws and nine defeats in 22 matches.
Following his dismissal, the GFA appointed Portuguese coach Carlos Queiroz to lead Ghana at the World Cup. Under Queiroz, the Black Stars advanced from Group L before exiting the tournament in the Round of 32 after losing by a lone goal to Colombia.
