The South African Football Association (SAFA) has appointed Pitso Mosimane as the new head coach of the Bafana Bafana.
The appointment was confirmed on Tuesday at a press conference, ending weeks of speculation over the identity of Hugo Broos’ successor.
Mosimane returns to the national team after Broos stepped down following the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where South Africa reached the knockout stage for the first time in their history.
The 62-year-old will begin his second permanent spell in charge of Bafana Bafana, having previously managed the national team between 2010 and 2012.
His first spell ended after South Africa failed to qualify for the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations, with Mosimane subsequently leaving his position.
He now returns with the immediate task of guiding South Africa through the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.
Bafana Bafana are scheduled to face Guinea and Eritrea in back-to-back qualifiers next month as they begin their bid to secure a place at the continental tournament.
Mosimane was also linked with the Ghana national team earlier this year following the dismissal of Otto Addo.
The experienced coach later revealed that he had been contacted over the Ghana job but turned down the opportunity, citing the limited time available before the 2026 World Cup.
Ghana subsequently appointed Carlos Queiroz on a short-term deal to lead the Black Stars during the tournament.
Mosimane will now turn his attention to rebuilding South Africa’s squad and preparing the team for their next major qualifying campaign.
