The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has responded to President John Dramani Mahama’s concerns over the apparent disappearance of colts football, insisting that the system remains active across the country under a new identity.
President Mahama recently questioned what had become of Ghana’s traditional colts football structure and urged the GFA to revive the grassroots game to help produce the next generation of football talent.
In response, GFA Vice-President Mark Addo dismissed suggestions that colts football no longer exists, explaining that the game has simply been restructured and rebranded as grassroots or youth football.
“Your Excellency, the Colts are being played across the country. The name is called grassroots or youth football,” Addo said while addressing the issue.
According to the GFA, youth football continues to be organized nationwide through structured competitions designed to identify and nurture talented young players before they progress to higher levels of the game.
The association maintains that the reforms were intended to modernize youth football development rather than abolish the colts system, stressing that clubs and academies remain actively involved in grooming future stars.
The exchange follows renewed discussions about youth football development in Ghana, with President Mahama calling for greater investment in grassroots football as part of efforts to restore the country’s footballing fortunes.
