KRC Genk striker Jerry Afriyie has earned a late call-up to Ghana’s senior national team for the upcoming international window following his impressive start to life in Belgium.
The 19-year-old forward was officially released by Genk to join the Black Stars after receiving an invitation from head coach Carlos Queiroz ahead of Ghana’s crucial fixtures later this month.
Afriyie’s inclusion comes as a reward for his strong performances since completing his move to Europe from Saudi Arabian side Al-Qadsiah. The highly-rated striker has continued his rapid development and will now have another opportunity to impress at senior international level.
The former Ghana U20 star has already made his mark with the Black Stars, scoring on his senior debut, and is regarded as one of the country’s brightest attacking prospects.
He will link up with the national team for the opening matches of Ghana’s 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign. The Black Stars begin with a difficult away fixture against Côte d’Ivoire in Bouaké on September 24 before hosting The Gambia at the Accra Sports Stadium on September 29.
Ghana will then round off the international break with a prestigious friendly against Morocco in Tangier on October 4 as Queiroz continues preparations for the challenges ahead.
Afriyie’s pace, movement and eye for goal are expected to provide the Black Stars with additional firepower as Ghana aim to make a strong start to their AFCON qualification campaign and continue building momentum under Queiroz.
