Ghana head coach Carlos Queiroz believes the Black Stars have the talent and potential to compete for major trophies but insists long-term success will depend on investment across all levels of football development.
The Portuguese coach says Ghana’s ambitions cannot be achieved by focusing only on the senior national team, stressing the need for improvements in youth development, infrastructure, training facilities, logistics and medical support.
According to Queiroz, building a successful football nation requires a complete system where every important area receives the necessary attention and resources.
“Ghana has all the conditions to win trophies. But you cannot put your resources in one basket, players or coach,” Queiroz said.
“You have to put resources in player development, youth education, facilities, infrastructure, logistics, medical capabilities. If you fail in those compartments, you cannot succeed.”
The experienced coach also highlighted squad consistency as another important factor affecting the Black Stars’ progress.
Queiroz believes constant changes to the national team make it difficult to develop understanding, chemistry and a winning mentality among players.
The former Portugal and Iran manager revealed that Ghana have previously struggled with player availability issues, including a period when as many as 12 players were unavailable for selection.
“You can’t change seven, eight, 10 players every time the national team plays and expect to succeed. We have to find a way to build the team around a core of players,” he explained.
“Availability, commitment and accountability are key words for success.”
Queiroz has returned for a second stint as Black Stars coach with the responsibility of rebuilding the team after Ghana missed the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
His immediate focus is securing qualification for the 2027 AFCON, with Ghana set to begin their campaign against Côte d’Ivoire in Bouaké on September 24 before hosting The Gambia at the Accra Sports Stadium three days later.
The Portuguese trainer will hope the qualifiers provide the platform to establish a more settled squad capable of competing at the highest level of African football once again.
