Augustine Boakye made his long-awaited senior international debut for Ghana on Thursday, but it was not an appearance to remember as the Black Stars suffered a 2-0 defeat to Côte d’Ivoire in their opening 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in Bouaké.
The Saint-Etienne forward entered the game in the second half as head coach Carlos Queiroz looked for an attacking spark after Ghana found themselves trailing against the Ivorians.
Boakye replaced Christopher Bonsu Baah and immediately brought more energy to Ghana’s attacking play as the Black Stars attempted to find a route back into the contest.
The 25-year-old showed glimpses of his attacking qualities during his time on the pitch and looked willing to take responsibility in the final third.
He came close to finding the back of the net when Ghana pushed forward in search of a consolation goal, but the forward was unable to change the outcome of the match.
Despite his individual efforts, Boakye’s first appearance for the senior national team ended in disappointment as Ghana were unable to recover from the two-goal deficit.
The defeat meant that what should have been a memorable occasion for the Saint-Etienne attacker was overshadowed by a difficult result for the Black Stars.
Boakye had waited for some time for his opportunity at senior international level. He was included in Ghana’s squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup but did not feature during the tournament.
His performances at club level subsequently helped him earn another opportunity with the national team under Queiroz.
The attacker had been enjoying a positive period with his club and his form earned him a place in Ghana’s squad for the opening AFCON 2027 qualifying assignments.
His introduction against Côte d’Ivoire represented the fulfilment of an important ambition, but the circumstances surrounding his debut made it difficult for him to fully enjoy the occasion.
Coming into the game with Ghana already behind, Boakye was tasked with helping the team improve its attacking threat against an Ivorian side that had taken control of the match.
The forward attempted to make an impact and provided Ghana with greater movement in attack.
He showed flashes of the qualities that have earned him recognition at club level, particularly his willingness to attack spaces and look for opportunities around the opposition penalty area.
However, Ghana struggled to create enough clear-cut opportunities to seriously threaten a comeback.
Boakye’s introduction therefore came during a difficult period for the Black Stars, with the team needing goals but struggling to consistently penetrate the Ivorian defence.
The defeat also denied the attacker the perfect start to his international career.
Instead of celebrating a debut victory, Boakye left the pitch having experienced a difficult first outing with Ghana’s senior national team.
Nevertheless, his appearance gives him valuable international experience and could serve as an important step in his development with the Black Stars.
The former Ghana youth international will now hope to build on the encouraging aspects of his performance and remain in Queiroz’s plans for the next qualifying fixture.
Ghana will return to action against The Gambia in Accra in their second Group qualifying match, and Boakye will be hoping for another opportunity to contribute.
A home fixture could provide the forward with a different setting and potentially more attacking opportunities, particularly if he is given more minutes by the technical team.
His performance against Côte d’Ivoire may also give Queiroz additional information about the options available to him in the attacking department.
For Boakye, the immediate focus will be on recovering from the disappointment of the defeat and preparing for the next assignment.
The Black Stars need a response after beginning their qualifying campaign with defeat, while players such as Boakye will be looking to help Ghana get back on track.
Although his Ghana debut was not one to remember because of the final result, the Saint-Etienne forward did provide some positive signs during his brief appearance.
The next opportunity could give him the chance to turn those glimpses into a more decisive contribution for the national team.
For now, Boakye’s first senior international appearance will be remembered as a debut overshadowed by Ghana’s 2-0 defeat to Côte d’Ivoire, but the forward will hope it becomes the beginning of a productive international career rather than the defining moment of it.
