Carlos Queiroz has described his departure as Ghana’s head coach as a difficult decision, saying the interests of Ghana, the Black Stars and the country’s football were placed above everything else in ending his professional relationship with the Ghana Football Association.

The Portuguese coach, who has parted ways with the GFA following a difficult start to Ghana’s 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign, said both parties agreed that ending the relationship was the most appropriate decision under the circumstances.

“This was not an easy decision, but both parties agreed that, under the present circumstances, ending our professional relationship was the most appropriate course of action, with the interests of Ghana, the Black Stars and Ghanaian football above everything else.

Queiroz also expressed his gratitude to the Ghana Football Association and its President for giving him the opportunity to lead the national team and serve a country with a long and proud football tradition.

“It has been an honour to serve Ghana and the Black Stars. I sincerely thank the Ghana Football Association and particularly its President for their trust and for the opportunity to lead such a proud football nation.

The former Black Stars coach said his intention was to help build a stronger future for the national team while contributing to the development of Ghanaian talent.

He, however, acknowledged that the conditions he considered necessary to achieve those objectives were not fully established, while the team’s recent performances also contributed to the decision to end his tenure.

“I came to Ghana determined to help build a stronger future for the Black Stars and support the development of the country’s talent. Despite our commitment and efforts, the necessary conditions were not fully established, and our recent performance added to the decision to bring this journey to an end.

Queiroz ended his farewell message by expressing respect, gratitude and pride over his time serving Ghana and the Black Stars.

“I leave with respect, gratitude and pride.”

Queiroz leaves the Black Stars after seven matches in charge, recording just one victory, two draws and four defeats, with Ghana scoring five goals and conceding ten during his tenure. His final record gives him a 14.3 per cent win rate, as the Black Stars struggled for consistency despite reaching the knockout stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup under his leadership.

The defeat to Côte d’Ivoire in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers was followed by the damaging 4-2 loss to The Gambia in Accra, where Ghana surrendered a two-goal lead. The latest results ultimately brought an end to Queiroz’s second spell with the Black Stars, leaving Ghana once again searching for a new head coach and, more importantly, answers to the deeper problems affecting the national team.
