Ghana FA and Sports Ministry to appoint five-member committee for Black Stars coaching search

The Ministry of Sports and Recreation and the Ghana Football Association (GFA) have agreed to establish a five-member committee to identify and recommend a new head coach for the Black Stars following the departure of Carlos Queiroz.

The decision was reached during a meeting between the Minister of Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, and officials of the GFA on Friday, October 2, 2026, as both institutions explored measures to improve the management of Ghana’s national teams and strengthen football development.

The committee will be tasked with assessing potential candidates and proposing a suitable replacement for Queiroz, whose working relationship with the GFA ended by mutual agreement on Thursday, October 1.

The Portuguese coach’s departure followed Ghana’s disappointing start to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, where the Black Stars suffered defeats in their opening two Group C matches.

Ghana began the campaign with a 2-0 loss to Côte d’Ivoire in Bouaké before suffering a 4-2 defeat against The Gambia at the Accra Sports Stadium. The loss to the Gambians came despite the Black Stars establishing a two-goal advantage in the first half.

The results have left Ghana without a point from their first two qualifying matches, putting the national team under pressure to recover its form and improve its chances of progressing in the competition.

According to details released after the meeting, the Technical Search Committee is expected to work within a limited timeframe, with its recommendations due to be submitted to the Sports Ministry and the GFA by Friday, October 9, 2026.

However, the identities of the five individuals who will serve on the committee have not yet been made public.

The next appointment will be crucial for a Black Stars team seeking to rebuild confidence after its disappointing start to the qualifying campaign. The incoming coach will also face the immediate challenge of preparing the team for a double-header against Somalia in November.

The upcoming matches are expected to provide an early test of the new coach’s ability to restore stability, improve performances and put Ghana back on course in the race for a place at the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.

The formation of the committee is part of a broader agreement between the Sports Ministry and the GFA to improve national-team administration and establish a more coordinated approach to football development in the country.

The two institutions are also expected to pursue measures aimed at strengthening the technical structures of Ghanaian football and creating a clearer pathway for the development of players across the national teams.

Attention will now turn to the composition of the committee, the calibre of candidates considered and the speed with which a new head coach can be appointed ahead of Ghana’s next qualifying assignments.
