The search for Ghana’s next Black Stars head coach has renewed discussions about appointing a Ghanaian coach, with names including Kwesi Appiah, Desmond Ofei and Laryea Kingston emerging as possible candidates.
The Ghana Football Association (GFA) is exploring options for a new manager following the departure of Carlos Queiroz, with calls growing for a local coach to be given the opportunity to lead the national team.
Former Black Stars captain Stephen Appiah has been mentioned among the local figures with the experience and leadership qualities required for the role. The ex-Juventus midfielder has previously worked within Ghana’s technical setup and brings a strong understanding of the national team environment.
Former Black Stars coach Kwesi Appiah is also regarded as one of the most experienced Ghanaian coaches available. He previously guided Ghana to qualification for the 2014 FIFA World Cup and has had two separate spells in charge of the senior national team.
Another name attracting attention is Desmond Ofei, who has worked extensively with Ghana’s youth national teams and is currently part of the Black Stars technical structure. His success with the Black Satellites has strengthened his reputation as one of the country’s emerging coaches.
Former Ghana midfielder Laryea Kingston has also expressed his willingness to take charge of the Black Stars if given the opportunity. Kingston has built his coaching profile through youth development roles in Ghana, Europe, the United States and Uganda.
Kingston has previously called for a competent Ghanaian coach to be considered for the national team job, arguing that local coaches understand the country’s football culture and challenges.
The GFA and the Ministry of Sports and Recreation are expected to complete the recruitment process and appoint a coach capable of rebuilding the Black Stars ahead of upcoming international competitions.
