Group D action at the ongoing AFCON in Gabon ensured the climaxing of the group stages at the tourney as the Black Stars of Ghana fell to 1-0 defeat to the Pharaohs of Egypt to book a date with DR Congo in the last eight of the competition.
Ghana came into the game looking to at least clinch a draw which would have ensured top spot in the group but Egypt, who needed victory to seal outright qualification and top spot consequently came out victorious with Mohammed Salah’s 11th minute strike separating the two sides and clinching top spot for the Pharaohs with 7 points.
Ghana meanwhile won their first two games and had already sealed qualification heading into the game and by virtue of the defeat against Egypt, placed second in the group with 6 points.
What is means is that the Black Stars square off with DR Congo who finished as winners in Group C whiles Egypt who finished as winners of Group D will face Morocco who themselves finished as runners-up in group C in what will be a tantalizing North African matchup. Meanwhile Mali and Uganda have been eliminated from the competition after playing out a 1-1 draw with Mali finishing 3rd with 2 points whiles Uganda finished bottom with just a point.
