Benin recorded a historic victory at the Africa Cup of Nations after edging Botswana 1-0 in their Group D match at the Stade Olympique de Rabat.
The win is Benin’s first-ever victory at the Afcon finals, ending a long wait that stretched across several tournament appearances. The decisive moment came in the 28th minute when defender Yohan Roche scored the only goal of the match.
Roche combined well with striker Steve Mounié, who returned to the team after missing the opening game. After a quick exchange of passes, Roche fired a looping shot from inside the box that beat Botswana goalkeeper Goitseone Phoko, sending Benin’s fans into celebration.
Botswana tried to respond and came close to equalising shortly after the goal. Mothusi Johnson struck a fine free-kick that crashed against the crossbar, denying the Zebras a quick reply. Despite the setback, Botswana continued to show fight and discipline.
In the second half, Benin pushed for a second goal. Goalkeeper Phoko kept Botswana in the game with a series of good saves, stopping efforts from Tamimou Ouorou and reacting quickly to block another dangerous shot. Benin also missed a late chance when Dodo Dokou blasted over the bar with only the keeper to beat.
At full time, the Benin players and officials celebrated wildly, knowing the victory had breathed new life into their tournament campaign. The three points give them a strong chance of reaching the last 16, especially with third place in the group likely to be enough to qualify.
Benin will now face Senegal in their final group match, while Botswana take on DR Congo. After breaking their Afcon curse, Benin will be hoping their historic win is just the beginning of a memorable run in Morocco.
