Ademola Lookman led Nigeria to a winning start at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, scoring the decisive goal in a 2-1 victory over Tanzania, though the overall performance left doubts about the Super Eagles’ title credentials.
Nigeria opened the scoring in the 36th minute through Semi Ajayi, whose powerful header capped a bright first-half display and put the Super Eagles in control. However, after the break, the momentum shifted as Tanzania grew in confidence.
Charles M’Mombwa drew the Taifa Stars level in the 50th minute, punishing Nigeria’s lapse in concentration and setting up a tense spell in the contest. Just moments later, Lookman restored Nigeria’s lead with a fierce left-footed strike from the edge of the box, a goal that ultimately proved decisive.
Despite falling behind again, Tanzania refused to back down and pushed hard in the closing stages, creating chances that tested Nigeria’s resolve. The Super Eagles were forced to defend deep late on, holding on until the final whistle.
While the win sends Nigeria to the top of Group C, concerns remain over their second-half display. Victor Osimhen struggled to find his rhythm and missed several opportunities, while Alex Iwobi impressed with his control and creativity in midfield.
Lookman, once again, stood out as Nigeria’s main attacking threat, delivering when it mattered most. Yet, with tougher tests ahead, the Super Eagles will need sharper performances if they are to truly challenge for the AFCON 2025 title.
