Mozambique have recorded their first-ever Africa Cup of Nations victory after edging Gabon 3–2 in a thrilling Group F clash in Agadir.
The Mambas ended a long wait for success at the tournament, having failed to win any of their previous sixteen AFCON matches. Goals from Faizal Bangal, Geny Catamo, and Diogo Calila sealed the historic triumph and boosted Mozambique’s hopes of reaching the knockout stage for the first time.
Bangal opened the scoring with a header before Catamo doubled the lead from the penalty spot. Gabon captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang pulled one back in added time of the first half, but Calila restored Mozambique’s two-goal advantage early in the second half.
Gabon fought back again through Aubameyang, setting up a tense final spell, but Mozambique held firm to secure the memorable win.
The result leaves Mozambique level on points with group leaders Cameroon and Ivory Coast, keeping their qualification hopes alive. Gabon, however, face a must-win final group game to stay in contention for progression.
