Senegal were forced to settle for a 1-1 draw against DR Congo in their Group D clash at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, played at the Tangier Grand Stadium on Saturday night.
The Lions of Teranga started the match strongly and controlled much of the first half. Senegal created several chances through Nicolas Jackson, Ismaïla Sarr, and Sadio Mané, but DR Congo stayed organised in defence and blocked many of the shots. Despite Senegal’s pressure, the first half ended goalless.
DR Congo surprised Senegal shortly after the hour mark. In the 61st minute, goalkeeper Edouard Mendy spilled a shot from Theo Bongonda, and Cédric Bakambu reacted quickly to slot the ball into the net from close range, giving the Leopards a shock lead.
Senegal responded almost immediately. Just eight minutes later, a strong run from Ibrahim Mbaye caused problems in the DR Congo defence, and the ball fell kindly to Sadio Mané, who calmly placed a right-footed shot into the bottom corner to level the score at 1-1.
The final stages of the match were tense, with both teams pushing for a winner. Senegal showed experience by slowing the game down and keeping possession, while DR Congo looked dangerous on the counterattack. However, no further goals were scored before the final whistle.
The draw keeps both Senegal and DR Congo in a strong position in Group D, with both sides moving closer to qualification for the last 16. As the group race tightens, the next round of matches promises even more excitement.
