Former Emmanuel Agyemang-Badu, a veteran midfielder of the Black Stars, has weighed in on the ongoing debate over whether veteran forward André Ayew should be included in Ghana’s squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Speaking on the matter, Agyemang-Badu described the prospect of honouring former players as a “privilege,”
emphasizing that such gestures are not compulsory but reflect a culture of appreciation for the country’s longest-serving footballers.
“I don’t think it’s compulsory, but if the country wants to honour former footballers I will support it. It’s a privilege,” he told Citi Sports.
The discussion has gained momentum following calls from political figures and sports administrators advocating for Ayew’s inclusion, citing his long service, loyalty, and contribution to Ghanaian football.
Ghana is scheduled to face Austria and Germany in late March as part of preparations for the 2026 World Cup.
