Amad Diallo powered Ivory Coast to a winning start in their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations campaign after sealing a composed 1-0 victory over Mozambique in Marrakech.
The defending champions, led by coach Emerse Faé, controlled proceedings from the opening exchanges, dictating the tempo and limiting Mozambique’s attacking threat with a disciplined and patient display.
The decisive moment arrived shortly after the restart when Amad Diallo reacted sharply to a knockdown from Franck Kessié, calmly steering a low effort into the bottom corner in the 49th minute to break the deadlock.
Ivory Coast had created several openings before then but lacked the final touch. Yan Diomande saw a penalty appeal turned down, while Ghislain Konan dragged a shot wide following a dangerous run down the flank. Kessié also went close, forcing a save before heading another opportunity off target.
As rain poured down, Vakoun Bayo missed with a header and watched a follow-up effort cleared off the line, while Mozambique pushed numbers forward in search of an equaliser. Despite the late pressure, the Elephants remained resolute at the back to protect their slender lead.
The victory sends Ivory Coast top of Group F and sets up a highly anticipated clash against Cameroon on December 28 at the Stade de Marrakech, as the champions continue their quest to retain the continental crown.
