Le Havre forward Andre Ayew will lead the Black Stars at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations after securing a spot in the final squad for the tournament in Ivory Coast.
Head coach Chris Hughton announced the 27-man roster on Monday morning, including Ayew despite his limited game time.
As the captain of the national team, Ayew is expected to play a pivotal role in Ghana’s quest for a fifth AFCON title. This marks Ayew’s seventh AFCON tournament, having featured in 2010, 2012, 2015, 2017, 2019, and 2021.
Surprisingly, deputy captain Thomas Partey of Arsenal missed out on the final squad, while PAOK defender Baba Rahman and inform Leicester City winger Abdul Fatawu Issahaku were also excluded.
Ghana is drawn in Group B, facing record-winners Egypt, Mozambique, and Cape Verde in the group phase. The West African powerhouse, with a history of success in AFCON, aims to add to their four titles, the last of which was secured in 1982.
The tournament is scheduled to kick off on Saturday, January 13, and run through to February 11, 2024.
