Thomas Partey has been labelled a “traitor” by furious Ghana fans after he was seen swapping shirts with Uruguay captain Luis Suarez on Friday afternoon.
The former Liverpool star Suarez is not a well-liked figure in Ghana after he handled on the line in the 2010 quarter-final – which the African side lost after a penalty shootout.
Despite winning 2-0, Suarez’s afternoon ended in heartbreak as Uruguay were eliminated at the group stage of the World Cup following South Korea’s win over Portugal.
Ghana had the chance to take the lead in the first half when they were awarded a penalty, but Andre Ayew fired a weak penalty at Fernando Muslera.
Fans took to social media to hit out at the Arsenal midfielder for his choice of shirt swap: “That’s a sackable offence,” one wrote, with another adding: “We shouldn’t call him again. He doesn’t care about the nation.”
Others demanded that he set Suarez’s shirt on fire with someone writing: “He better burn that shirt.”
