Berekum Chelsea have announced the tragic passing of their young forward, Dominic Frimpong, following a violent armed robbery incident on Sunday evening.
The attack occurred while the team was travelling back to Berekum after their Ghana Premier League Matchday 29 game against FC Samartex at DUN’s Park, where they suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat.
According to reports from the club, the team bus was ambushed along the Bibiani–Goaso highway near Ahyiresu. Armed assailants reportedly blocked the road, forcing players and officials to abandon the bus and escape into nearby bushes to protect themselves.
In the midst of the confusion, several individuals sustained injuries. Frimpong, aged 20, suffered a gunshot wound to the head. He was quickly transported to the Bibiani Government Hospital but was sadly pronounced dead upon arrival.
The Ghana Police Service has launched an investigation and is actively pursuing the attackers, who fled the scene. Authorities are also working to account for all team members, as some remain unaccounted for after dispersing during the incident.
Frimpong had recently joined Berekum Chelsea on loan from Aduana FC in January, with the deal expected to last until the end of the 2025/26 season. During his time with the club, he made 13 appearances and scored two goals.
His untimely death has left the club and the Ghana football community in deep mourning.
