Betting Scandal Rocks Ghana Football: Yaw Yeboah handed lifetime ban in the United States

In a shocking development that has sent ripples across the footballing world, Ghanaian midfielder Yaw Yeboah has been handed a lifetime ban by the United States Major League Soccer (MLS) after being found guilty of breaching the league’s gambling rules. The suspension is part of a broader crackdown by MLS to uphold the integrity of the sport, following revelations that Yeboah, alongside fellow player Derrick Jones, engaged in betting activities in violation of league policies.

The investigation, conducted by an independent law firm retained by MLS, began after the league received suspicious betting alerts through its partners. The review revealed that both players had placed extensive wagers on soccer matches, including bets on their own teams, during the 2024 and 2025 seasons. In one notable instance, Yeboah and Jones reportedly placed a bet predicting that Jones would receive a yellow card in a match on October 19, 2024—a prediction that came true.

MLS officials confirmed that while the investigation suggested the players may have shared conditional information with one another, there was no evidence that the betting activity influenced the outcome of any matches. Despite this, the league emphasized its zero-tolerance approach toward any actions that could compromise the integrity of its competitions.

MLS Commissioner Don Garber stated, “Major League Soccer remains steadfast in its commitment to match integrity. The league will continue to enforce its policies, enhance education efforts, and advocate for the elimination of yellow card wagering in all states to protect the integrity of our competition for clubs, players, and fans.”

Yaw Yeboah, who arrived in the United States in 2022, initially signed with Columbus Crew before transferring to LAFC in 2025. His meteoric rise in MLS had made him a notable figure among Ghanaian footballers abroad, and the ban marks a significant setback in his career. Derrick Jones, who was also implicated in the scandal, faces similar sanctions.

The news has sparked widespread discussions among football fans and sports analysts, particularly in Ghana, where Yeboah’s exploits in MLS had previously been a source of pride. Many experts argue that the scandal highlights the growing need for education and stricter enforcement regarding gambling regulations among professional athletes.

This development comes on the heels of other sporting controversies globally, underscoring the risks associated with betting in professional sports. MLS has reiterated that while betting by players on matches is strictly prohibited, they are committed to maintaining fair play and taking decisive action against any violations.

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) is yet to comment on the incident, but the news is expected to reverberate across the national team, the Black Stars, raising questions about oversight and ethical conduct among players representing the country internationally.

Fans, meanwhile, are calling for more transparency and stronger deterrents to prevent similar incidents in the future. The scandal has sparked debates on social media, with many pointing to the urgent need for educational programs aimed at professional athletes regarding gambling risks and ethical responsibilities.

As the story develops, it remains clear that the lifetime ban imposed on Yaw Yeboah will serve as a cautionary tale for players across the globe, emphasizing that even high-profile athletes are not immune from consequences when breaching league rules. The MLS has stated its commitment to continuous monitoring and educational initiatives to ensure that the integrity of the game is preserved for clubs, players, and fans alike.

This incident adds to a growing list of gambling-related controversies in football worldwide and will likely influence how leagues, clubs, and regulatory bodies handle similar cases in the future, reinforcing the message that sportsmanship and integrity must always come first.
