Ghana’s Black Queens endured a tough start to their 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) journey, suffering a 2-0 defeat to reigning champions South Africa on Monday at the Honneur Stadium in Oujda.
Although the Ghanaian side showed determination and flashes of brilliance, they were undone by two early goals from Banyana Banyana in the first half. South Africa’s experience and sharp attacking play made the difference, handing Ghana an early setback in the competitive Group C.
Alice Kusi nearly gave Ghana the lead with a powerful shot that rattled the crossbar, while Evelyn Badu also came close with a header that struck the post. Despite these chances, the Queens couldn’t find the back of the net and paid the price for their missed opportunities.
South Africa took full advantage of defensive lapses from Ghana, converting their chances with clinical precision to take control of the match before the hour mark.
The Black Queens will now turn their attention to their upcoming group fixtures against Mali and Tanzania. With qualification still possible—especially for one of the best third-placed teams—Ghana will need to bounce back quickly to keep their tournament hopes alive.
