Ghana’s senior national team Captain, Asamoah Gyan has fired back at his former Black Stars striker Prince Tagoe over his earlier comments suggesting the Kayserispor goal poacher wasn’t fit for the Black Stars captaincy role.
Tagoe earlier in an interview with Accra based SVTV indicated the Black Stars team had quiet a few senior players with the likes of Michael Essien and Sule Muntari who were good enough to lead the team and that Coach Kwesi Appiah appointing Gyan as new captain after Stephen Appiah’s retirement wasn’t the best.
The comments which did not go down well with Gyan forced him reply Tagoe in a seperate interview on Kumasi based Angle FM.
” Well Tagoe l must commend has shared his point of view. l come nowhere near Michael Essien talk of level of football that’s what he says. But l want him to understand l wasn’t the one to go in for the captaincy role but it was rather the Black Stars management board who as at that time went for a board meeting and upon considering my form-guide decided to hand over to me the captaincy role,” Gyan noted.
“If he’s to talk of seniority matters we can look on to assess the Brazilian national team which currently has to its disposal quiet a lot of senior players talk of the Thiago Silva, Fred, Marcelo and what a view but is a ‘young’ player in the shape of Neymer do-Santos Jenior spire-heading the team as it’s captain. So Prince should come over again.”
“I’ve been in the same team with Prince at the national U-23 level where he claims he was the captain.
“I was above him talk of seniority in football as at that but l uttered any word to his captaincy role, so what is he implying.
“Even when the hand-band was later strip off his shoulders to be given to Michael Helebge a junior player as at that time l still uttered not a single word because l knew it forms part of the game.
“So if Tagoe is to come out to apportion such kind of blames over my Black Stars captaincy role I must say l’m very disappointed in him but can’t blame him that much because that is his opinion and he is entitled to that”.
“Opinion they say are like noises and everybody has one, so he is entitled to apportion whatsoever blames he desires of me,” Gyan concluded.
