Black Stars coach Charles Kwablan Akonnor has paid tribute to former boss Kwasi Appiah after finishing the 2021 AFCON qualifiers in style with a massive 3-1 victory over São Tomé & Principe.
Akonnor took over from Appiah as Ghana coach in January 2020, having worked as his assistant at the start of the qualifiers in November 2019.
After the Black Stars’ heavy win over São Tomé in the final AFCON qualifier in Accra, Akoonor thanked and also praised the 2014 World Cup gaffer for beginning the journey that ended successfully last Sunday.
“I would like to, first of all, thank my former boss Kwasi Appiah who started the qualifiers winning two games, he’s the reason why we just needed to win one and draw to make it and I want to acknowledge him for everything,” he said after the game.
Nicholas Opoku headed home to Mohammed Kudus’s corner to put Ghana ahead Jordan Ayew doubled the lead from the sport.
Baba Rahman extended the four-time African Champions’ lead to 3-0 when Ajax Star Kudus Mohammed combined with him to produce an easy tap in goal.
The visitors pulled one back after a Razak Abalora blunder saw Fernandez Carlvaho hit the back of the net.
