Member of Parliament for Abura Asebu-Kwamankese Constituency, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has called for a measured approach in tackling the issue of dual national players in connection to Ghana’s National Men’s Football Team, the Black Stars.
He made this comment in his address on the floor of Ghana’s Ninth Parliament of the Fourth Republic as Members of Parliament took turns to congratulate the Black Stars for qualifying to the 2026 FIFA World Cup that takes place in the United States of America, Mexico and Canada.
Following Ghana’s qualification, there have been serious debates over the potential inclusion of dual national players, including Eddie Nketiah reportedly, who didn’t compete in the qualifiers in Ghana’s World Cup roster with Ghana Football Association (GFA) President Kurt Okraku stating that players who turned down the opportunity to play for Ghana before, won’t be given a call up.
On his part, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, who doubles as the Minister in Charge of Government Communication, stated,
“I call for some caution in the way that we approach this matter. It is true that there were some players who rebuffed our entreaties in the past…but there are areas in the team that require some improvement and therefore I will call for sober reflection on this matter. If we are not careful and we act out of emotion, we may make mistakes that will come back to haunt us.”
Meanwhile, President of the Ghana Football Association, Kurt Okraku has strongly sated that players who previously turned down opportunity to represent Ghana at the senior national level, won’t be given the chance to be part of the Black Stars’ squad to play at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
In a firm statement, Mr. Okraku said the national team is only open to players who have shown commitment and respect for Ghana.
“If we have approached you before and you turned us down, if you’ve shown a lack of respect or refused to play for Ghana in the past — count yourself out,” he declared.
