The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has officially announced Sunday, August 31, 2025, as the date for the 2025 Champion of Champions match, the traditional season-opening fixture on the Ghana football calendar.
This annual one-off encounter will serve as the curtain-raiser for the 2025/26 Ghana Premier League season, featuring newly crowned Premier League champions Gold Stars and MTN FA Cup winners Asante Kotoko.
In line with Article 9 of the Premier League Regulations, the Champion of Champions pits the previous season’s league champions against the FA Cup holders in a battle for the first silverware of the campaign.
Gold Stars earned their maiden appearance in this fixture after a historic 2024/25 season in which they clinched their first-ever Ghana Premier League title. Asante Kotoko, Ghana’s most successful club, secured their spot with a dramatic 2-1 victory over Golden Kick in the FA Cup final to claim their 10th title in the competition’s history.
The Champion of Champions match is more than just a trophy decider—it sets the tone for the new season, offering fans a tantalizing glimpse of the battles to come between Ghana’s elite sides.
The previous edition of the match saw FC Samartex 1996 edge past Nsoatreman FC 1-0 in a fiercely contested showdown at the TnA Stadium in Tarkwa.
This year’s showdown between two in-form sides—Gold Stars and Kotoko—promises to be equally thrilling, with both teams eager to start the season on a winning note and claim early bragging rights.
