Former Ghana coach, Charles Kwabla (CK) Akonnor, has attributed the remarkable turnaround of Sudan’s national team to the leadership of his compatriot, Kwesi Appiah.
Appiah, who previously worked with Akonnor as his assistant during their time with the Black Stars, has revitalized the Falcons of Jediane since taking charge.
Under his guidance, Sudan has secured four wins in seven matches, placing them two points ahead of Senegal in Group B of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers and currently sitting second in Group F of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
One of Appiah’s notable achievements was leading Sudan to a hard-fought goalless draw against Ghana in the AFCON qualifiers at the Accra Sports Stadium. The two sides will face off again on Tuesday, October 15, in Libya for the return leg.
“He is as good as he was with the Ghana national team. He does not talk much, but tactically, with the modern trends of football, he is well-informed,” Akonnor told Joy Sports.
“If anybody says he does not know anything, it is a lie. This is what we are fond of doing. He has transformed this Sudan team. They are fearless, very confident, and it can only be the work of Kwesi Appiah,” Akonnor added.
