The Netherlands international of Ghanaian descent, Cody Gakpo has expressed his delight after returning to action for Dutch outfit, PSV Eindhoven following the Euro 2020.
Gakpo was part of the Dutch side who crushed out at the round 16th stage after losing to Czech Republic, but the player says he is happy to be back in time for club football ahead of the 2021/22 season.
“Of course I’m happy to be here again,” He said after returning to play for the team in their win over Galatasaray.
“After the European Championships I went on holiday straight away and now I’m completely focused on PSV again. It was special to make my debut in the Dutch national team. I think every footballer wants to reach that moment in his career. All in all, the past few months have been a great experience, except for the early elimination of course.”
The 22-year-old was also quizzed about his time with the national team during the just ended European Championships, adding: “I think we could have gone far. The group was good and we got along in a nice way. From a PSV perspective, the start of the tournament was of course beautiful. Denzel (Dumfries, ed.) did very well and later that also applied to Donyell (Malen, ed.). They also welcomed me very well when I first joined the selection. I have been able to taste a high level and have known many educational moments. I hope I can take those experiences with me to PSV.”
However, after returning to club football, Gakpo says he is looking forward to getting things running again despite the transfer rumours making the headlines while also looking out to playing more games for the club to become match fit.
“Because of social media I didn’t have to miss much,” he revealed.
“Of course I saw all the transfer updates and I watched the first training session with Denzel and Donyell. I watched the practice matches on vacation and I think we want to do about the same things on the pitch as we tried last season. I’m looking forward to popping.
“I think I still have some fitness in me. I haven’t been gone that long. You only become match fit when you play matches. Let’s get started on that quickly.”
Gakpo came off the bench in the 62nd minute as PSV thumped the Turkish outfit with a 5-1 scoreline at the Philips Stadion.
