The 2025-26 season is a few weeks away from kick-off with CAF set to organise the draw for the preliminary rounds of the CAF Champions League and Confederation Cup on Saturday, August 9th in Dar es Salaam, the capital of Tanzania.

The Confederation of African Football always release the rankings of the Best Clubs on the Continent based on the performances of teams in the last four seasons.

How Ghanaian clubs are ranked

Of the 75 clubs ranked by CAF, only two are from Ghana. Dreams FC and Medeama occupy 26th and 51st positions, with 12 and 4 points won, respectively.

Dreams FC reached the semi-finals of the 2023-24 Confederation Cup, where they were defeated by eventual winners Zamalek 3-0 on aggregate.

The Still Believe’s trip to the last four helped them record the 12 points that they haven’t added to it for more than a year.

Medeama, on the other hand, has only four points from a win and a draw in the six games of the CAF Champions League they participated in two seasons ago.

Ghanaian clubs Bibiani Gold Stars and Asante Kotoko will represent the nation in the Champions League and the Confederation Cup after winning the GPL and the MTN FA Cup to win the slots.

Top 10 clubs by CAF

The 2025 edition has been announced with Egyptian club Al Ahly sitting on top with a whopping 78 points, eight more ahead of second-placed Mamelodi Sundowns of South Africa. The Brazilians were runner-up in the CAF Champions League, losing 3-2 on aggregate against Pyramids. Al Ahly had won the previous two and reached the semi-finals of last season in the CAF Champions League.

Esperance Sportive de Tunis sits in third place with 57 points won. Moroccan side RS Berkane are the 4th best African club after winning their third CAF Commendation Cup title after beating Tanzanian side Simba 3-1 on aggregate.

Simba SC and Pyramids occupy 5th and 6th positions. Simba have amassed 48 points whilst the reigning champions of Africa, Pyramids, have 47 points.

Zamalek, who won the 2023-24 CAF Champions League, are ranked seventh with 42 points. Moroccan giants Wydad Casablanca, who have failed to deliver in the last two seasons, sit in 8th place with 39 points.

Algerian clubs USM Alger, who lifted the 2022-23 CAF Confederation Cup, and Belouizdad complete the top 10 best teams with 37 and 36 points respectively.

  1. Al Ahly – Egypt
  2. Mamelodi Sundowns – South Africa
  3. Esperance – Tunisia
  4. Berkane – Morocco
  5. Simba – Tanzania
  6. Pyramids – Egypt
  7. Zamalek – Egypt
  8. Wydad Casablanca – Morocco
  9. USM Alger – Algeria
  10. Belouizdad – Algeria

The list is, as usual, dominated by North African sides, with only Mamelodi Sundowns and Simba SC the only teams not from the region.

Egypt have three teams, Morocco has two, Algeria have two, with Tanzania, South Africa and Tunisia completing the list
