Dutch Eredivisie powerhouse Ajax Amsterdam have joined race with German side Bayer Leverkusen for the signature of Manchester United defender Timothy Fosu-Mensah.
The Manchester Evening News, reports that although Fosu-Mensah has already begun talks with Bayer Leverkusen, Ajax have expressed late interest in the £1.5m defender and could bring him to the Johan Cruijff Arena this month.
Fosu-Mensah,23, is out of contract at the end of the season after turning down a fresh contract offer at Old Trafford.
United triggered a one-year extension on his deal last year to protect the player’s value, but Fosu-Mensah is desperate to play some football.
The right-back has made just three appearances this season and is well down the pecking order at right-back.
He started the first Premier League games of the season – the 3-1 defeat by Crystal Palace – and has made the squad only twice since.
Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjær told Metro Sports that the Dutch International will surely leave the club this winter.
“I’m not sure if Timo is going to stay or [if] he’s going to take an option now,” Solskjaer said, per the Metro.
“He’s not played enough, so of course he’s been allowed to speak to clubs, with a view to leaving now in January.
“It’s difficult when you’ve got good players, talented players, and you can’t give them game time.
“He’s now at the stage where he needs to go and play again. It might be [at the] end of January, or it might be in the summer that he finds somewhere else.”
