Legendary Ghana international Mohammed Ahmed ‘Polo’ has offered some great advice on how Black Stars Coach Charles Akonnor can perfectly adopt the style of football played by Ghana’s AFCON winning 1978 squad.
Akonnor, 46, recently in an interview mentioned that he would love to adopt what seems to have worked for the 1978 squad and modify it with his coaching philosophy to help end Ghana’s trophy drought that has troubled the country since 1982.
Mohammed Polo who was a key member of the team in 1978, believes Akonnor can only achieve success with such a football philosophy with home-based players.
“The difficult thing is that, we so much rely on the foreign based players. I will advise him to have a standing team made up of local players,” he told Accra-based Asempa FM.
“What helped us (1978 squad) is we had ample time (to prepare). What he can do with the local ones is they have to go to camp and they train so he can inculcate the style of the 1978 football, which is the brand of Ghana football”, he noted.
“To me, he should start with the local players and he will be on course” Polo said.
