The President, H.E Nana Addo Dankwah Akuffo Addo says his government won’t interfere with the affairs concerning the leadership and works of the Ghana Football.
The president’s stance stems from the fact that he believes the football association is autonomous and as such its actions can only be interrogated directly by the world football governing body, FIFA.
There have been widespread allegations in the media and public landscapes that the current leadership of the country’s football governing body is corrupt and as such their dealings have plunged Ghana football into the doldrums.
Many Ghanaians, based on radio and TV commentary strongly hold the perception that several GFA officials engage in acts of bribery, match manipulations and that the only way forward is to cause the current leadership under Kwesi Nyantakyi to relinquish power.
In recent past, campaigns have been run to upstage the current FA leadership which have yielded no success.
Speaking in an organised engagement with media persons from across the nation at the Flag Staff house earlier on Wednesday, President Akuffo Addo said “my understanding is that the football association by FIFA rules, by all rules is supposed to be an independent organisation”.
“And that those who are involved in the football administration in the country will deal with the issues of mismanagement”.
President Akuffo Addo also believes football matters should be handled by the respective football
He said “if there is mismanagement, I don’t believe its an area where the government should intervene to sort things out if things need to be sorted
He additionally stated that ” those in the industry, those in the sector, those in football are the ones who are meant to deal with football issues and my understanding is that this is the basic rule that FIFA is very insistent; on that there should be no executive interference”.
The president’s response will unsurprisingly draw divided opinions across the football space in the country.
