George Weah denounces claims of support for controversial AFCON title decision

Former Liberian President and Ballon d’Or winner George Weah has publicly denied supporting the Confederation of African Football’s ruling that stripped Senegal of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations title and awarded it to Morocco.

In a statement, Weah described social media posts linking him to the decision as “completely false” and urged those circulating such claims to stop. He joined other critics condemning the ruling and called on the Court of Arbitration for Sport to intervene.

Weah argued that the decision undermines the authority of match officials, damages confidence in African football’s fairness, and sets a dangerous precedent for future major decisions on the continent.

The controversy follows CAF’s Appeal Board ruling on March 17, which declared Morocco 3-0 winners after Senegal players walked off the pitch to protest a late penalty, a decision now being challenged at CAS.
