Hearts of Oak are set to make their long-awaited return to the Accra Sports Stadium on Wednesday, April 2, 2025, for their outstanding Ghana Premier League fixture against Nations FC.
This was confirmed by the Ghana Football Association (GFA) in an announcement on Monday.
The decision comes despite recent remarks from National Sports Authority (NSA) Director-General Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, who described the stadium as a “crime scene” and stated that it would remain unavailable for domestic matches due to ongoing renovation works.
The stadium was recently used for Ghana’s emphatic 5-0 victory over Chad in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, although sections of the stands were cordoned off.
It remains unclear what discussions took place behind the scenes that led to the GFA’s announcement of Hearts of Oak’s return.
Since September 2024, Hearts have been unable to use the Accra Sports Stadium after it was closed for urgent upgrades to meet international standards.
As a result, they have been hosting their home matches at the University of Ghana Stadium.
Their return marks the first time they will play at their traditional home ground since their 1-0 defeat to newly promoted Basake Holy Stars in the opening match of the season.
Currently fourth on the league table with 37 points from 23 games, Hearts of Oak are five points behind leaders Asante Kotoko.
Under the guidance of Coach Abubakar Ouattara, the Phobians will aim to take advantage of their homecoming to boost their title challenge against a strong Nations FC side.
