Ghana fell 2–0 to Japan in the Kirin Challenge Cup friendly played at the Toyota Stadium on Friday, November 14, 2025.
The Black Stars went into the match without several key players, including Mohammed Kudus, Jordan Ayew, and Thomas Partey, and their absence was evident as Japan controlled the game from start to finish. Fresh from a historic 3–2 victory over Brazil, the Japanese side approached the match with confidence and intensity, keeping Ghana pinned back for long spells.
Japan broke the deadlock in the 16th minute through Takumi Minamino after a well-worked move involving Sano Kaishu, Doan, Watanabe, and Kubo Takefusa. Minamino was left unmarked inside the box and made no mistake with his finish. Ghana set up with a compact five-man defence, but Japan continued to find spaces and test goalkeeper Joseph Anang throughout the match.
The Black Stars tried to stay organized and counter when possible, but they struggled to create meaningful chances in the final third. Japan doubled their lead in the 60th minute when Ritsu Doan received a pass from Kubo on the right side of the box and fired a precise shot into the near post, beating Anang for the second time.
Ghana’s frustrations deepened when midfielder Francis Abu suffered a serious injury and had to be stretchered off. The team never fully recovered their rhythm, while Japan introduced a number of young debutants in the closing stages as they maintained their control of the match.
The defeat serves as a reminder of the work ahead for the Black Stars as they continue preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The team now shifts focus to their next friendly against South Korea on Tuesday, hoping to correct mistakes and build momentum.
