Former Ghana national football team striker Asamoah Gyan believes Ghana’s showdown with England national football team at the 2026 FIFA World Cup will be a fiercely contested encounter.
Ghana, four-time African champions, have been drawn into Group L alongside Panama national football team, England, and Croatia national football team, in what promises to be a challenging group.
The Black Stars are scheduled to face England in their second group match on June 23, a fixture already generating significant anticipation among fans and pundits alike.
Speaking during the official unveiling of Ghana’s national team jersey in New York, Gyan acknowledged England’s quality but remained confident that Ghana can rise to the occasion.
“We are playing against England, we are in the same group. You know, on paper, England, of course, is one of the best in the world right now,” he said.
“You know, but people are optimistic about that game. To play against England. I’m not thinking about playing England; I just want Ghana to qualify from the group stage to go to the next stage of the competition, so we’ll see what happens. But Ghana against England is going to be a very, very good game,” he added.
While recognizing the strength of the Three Lions, Gyan emphasized that Ghana’s primary objective should be progression beyond the group stage rather than focusing on a single opponent.
The Black Stars will begin their World Cup campaign against Panama on June 17 before concluding their group fixtures against Croatia on June 27.
Gyan also has personal history against England, having scored a dramatic late equaliser in a 1-1 international friendly in 2011, cancelling out an earlier goal from Andy Carroll.
As preparations intensify, Ghana will engage in friendly matches against Austria national football team and Germany national football team, providing crucial opportunities to fine-tune the squad ahead of the global tournament.
With optimism building, Gyan’s remarks underline the belief that Ghana can compete strongly on the world stage and deliver exciting performances against top opposition.
