Belgian Jupiler Pro League outfit Gent are set to release Ghanaian defender Nana Akwasi Asare this summer with one more year left on his contract, according to Graphic Sports.
Asare, 33, has been very consistent for the “Buffalos” for the past seven years, playing a total of 274 games and scoring four goals with 16 assists. However, he is faced with the prospects of fining new employers as he gets to the twilight of his career.
The defender is among the list of players who have been put on transfer by the club this summer, including Colon Coosemans, Jan Van den Bergh, and Mamadou Sylla.
Asare was the captain of Gent until last year when he willingly handed the armband to Vadis Odjidja-Ofoe who had also shown great leadership qualities.
Asare, turned 34 on July 11, was voted last month by fans of Gent in their official Best 11 players of the past decade.
He previously featured for Feyenoord Ghana (WAFA), Feyenoord Rotterdam, Royal Antwerp, KV Mechelen as well as FC Utrecht.
He has been one of Ghana’s most consistent players in Europe over the past decade.
