Former Black Leopards head coach Maxwell Konadu has shared striking insights into the contrasting football cultures of Ghana and South Africa, highlighting what he believes gives Ghanaian players a crucial edge.
According to Konadu, Ghanaian footballers demonstrate greater mental strength—largely fueled by their ambition to succeed beyond Africa.
“A South African player grows up having almost everything a European player does,” Konadu said.
“So, the hunger and drive to move abroad aren’t as intense as with Ghanaian players, who are always eager to travel to Europe.”
He emphasized that this hunger creates a significant advantage in terms of resilience and determination.
“One thing is certain, the Ghanaian mentality. We have a stronger mindset than South African players,” he added.
However, Konadu clarified that this does not downplay the talent found in South Africa. Instead, it points to a psychological edge he believes Ghanaian players carry.
He also drew attention to coaching differences between the two leagues, stating that South African coaches tend to be more innovative and unpredictable.
“In South Africa, each team has its identity, and you never know what to expect next. In Ghana, you can often predict a coach’s tactics before a game,” he observed.
