Ghanaian teenage midfielder Taufik Seidu marked a major milestone in his career after making his first-team debut for Atlético Madrid in their 2-1 defeat to FC Barcelona in La Liga on Saturday evening.
The 18-year-old, who has been training with the senior team under Diego Simeone since the start of the 2025/26 season, was finally handed his long-awaited opportunity at the Estadio Metropolitano.
Atletico made a strong start to the contest and took the lead in the 39th minute through Giuliano Simeone, who finished brilliantly to give the hosts the advantage.
However, Barcelona responded almost immediately, with Marcus Rashford equalising just three minutes later to level the score before halftime.
The game took a dramatic turn just before the break when Nico González was sent off after a foul on Lamine Yamal, leaving Atletico to play the entire second half with ten men.
Despite the numerical disadvantage, Atletico showed great resilience and organisation, holding off Barcelona’s pressure for much of the second half.
But their resistance was eventually broken in the 87th minute when Robert Lewandowski came off the bench to score the winning goal for the visitors.
Seidu was introduced in the 68th minute, replacing Clément Lenglet, marking a significant breakthrough in his development.
The talented midfielder joined Atletico’s academy at the age of nine after moving from Ghana and has since risen through the ranks, earning a reputation as one of the club’s most promising young players.
Although he has represented Spain at youth level, Seidu remains eligible to play for Ghana, offering a potential boost for the Black Stars in the future.
