English-born Ghanaian teenager Jarell Quansah was on the scoresheet for Liverpool U19s who defeated Atletico Madrid in the UEFA Youth League on Wednesday evening
Max Woltman shot the hosts ahead with a very nice finish.
Liverpool Under 19s moved one step closer to UEFA Youth League progression on Wednesday. They beat Atletico Madrid 2-0, thanks to two second-half goals.
The first was undoubtedly the most notable. Striker Max Woltman, who saw a first-half penalty saved, found the net with a very bright turn.
Billy Koumetio fired the ball into Woltman on the edge of the box and the 18-year-old’s first touch was exquisite. He moved the ball past the defender and finished in a flash – a fantastic goal.
This win moves Liverpool up to second in their group. They now sit three points ahead of Atletico but three points behind group-leaders FC Porto.
That isn’t enough for automatic progression, however. The group winners move into the next round but second-place sides must face a Play-Off against some domestic champions.
Liverpool’s home game against Porto in three weeks is all-important, then. Win that and the young Reds face a very good chance of winning this group and moving into the next round.
And that would be impressive, to say the least. Liverpool won this one without Tyler Morton or Mateusz Musialowski, with the latter never getting off the bench. The Reds still have ways to boost this side, even after a win like this.
For now, though, this young team simply deserves applause for a very impressive performance against a side that beat them last time out.
