Black Stars left-back, Gideon Mensah has ‘let the cat out of the box’ concerning his decision to leave Champions League side RedBull Salzburg for Vitoria Guimarães.
The former West Africa Football Academy (WAFA) SC graduate threw more light as to why he left the Austrian Típico Bundesliga giants to join the Black and Whites in Portugal.
In a one-on-one interview with godfred.substack.com, the Ghanaian left-back did not shy away from his decision to leave Champions League football behind to join a more of a mid-table team in Portugal.
“A lot of times people just talk about your decisions without understanding your context. They don’t know how you hustle. The day by day of your life is not known to them and yet they want to judge”, Gideon said.
Furthermore, the youngster explained that, he needed more playing time and considered the growth of his career than warming the bench of RB Salzburg all in the name of Champions League football.
“I am a player and to me that means playing as many games as I can muster. I could make the easy decision and stay with Red Bull. Most players are satisfied with being in a Champions League squad and warming the bench”, he stated.
He added that, being in a Champions League team without playing much football is not a good thing to him and therefore had to move to a new club to play more games.
“People see your name they never actually see you play. You understand? That is just not it for me”, he concluded.
The 22-year-old Ghanaian joined the Austrian side Liefering from WAFA in 2016 on loan before returning to Red Bull Salzburg in 2017.
