Experienced and astute FIFA referee William Agbovi believes the performance of referees in the just ended Ghana Premier League season deserves praises rather than condemnation.
In an interview with Otec FM, Agbovi who is regarded as one of the best referees on the local scene rated the performance of referees 80% which is an “A” mark.
“This season’s GPL was not easy as the previous seasons, it was very hot than the previous ones
The performance of the referees this season was not bad but there were a lot of review cases and some of the referees were also suspended which I was part of them. But aside that I will say the performance was not bad and we rate them 80%” William Agbovi asserted.
This season league saw the institution of a Referee Review Panel who assessed the performance of referees during matches and issued punishment to referees whose performance the panel deemed underwhelming.
Many referees became victims with some missing up to eight games.
Agbovi’s assessment will be a surprise to followers who believes that the output of referees especially in the second phase of the season was below par.
