Ghanaian midfielder Thomas Partey has paid a heartfelt tribute to former coach Diego Simeone, crediting the Atletico Madrid manager for transforming his mentality and instilling in him a relentless drive to win.
Partey, who spent five seasons under the Argentine tactician at Atletico Madrid, said Simeone’s demanding approach helped him grow both as a player and as a person.
“He’s a coach that brings the best out of you mentally,” Partey told broadcaster Kafui Dey. “Because he knows that when you are strong up here, you can always give your best.”
Partey was promoted to Atletico’s first team in July 2015 and featured in 188 matches across all competitions, scoring 16 goals and providing 12 assists before sealing a move to English side Arsenal in 2020.
Reflecting on his time in Madrid, Partey highlighted Simeone’s philosophy of prioritizing grit and determination over individual brilliance.
“You don’t need to be extra or anything, you just have to win,” he said. “He even expects his striker to track back and defend.”
