Coach Christopher Nimley, has passionately kicked against the possible return of Andre Ayew to the Ghana national football team, insisting that the veteran forward’s time with the national team should have ended after the last Africa Cup of Nations tournament.

According to the coach, Ayew has served the national team for nearly two decades and has already made significant contributions, but he believes the time has come for the experienced player to step aside to allow a new generation of footballers to take over.

Speaking on the issue, Nimley stated that every football career eventually reaches its end and suggested that the most appropriate moment for Ayew to bow out was after the recent 2023 Africa Cup of Nations held in Ivory Coast.

“Andre Dede Ayew has played the Black Stars for 19 years. Everything that has a beginning has an end. His final chapter was in the Ivory Coast AFCON,” Nimley said while sharing his views on the ongoing debate about Ayew’s possible return to the national team.

The coach went further to deliver a harsh assessment of Ayew’s leadership period as captain of the Black Stars, describing it as the worst captaincy era in the history of the national team. According to him, the team experienced several disappointing results during Ayew’s leadership, which he believes should be carefully considered when discussions about his return arise.

“His regime as captain is the worst in the history of the national team,” Nimley added, emphasising that the Black Stars need a new direction and fresh leadership moving forward.

Andre Ayew remains one of the most experienced players in Ghana’s football history. Over the years, he has been a key figure for the Black Stars, representing the country in several major international tournaments including multiple editions of the Africa Cup of Nations and the FIFA World Cup. His long service has made him one of the most recognisable figures in Ghanaian football.

Despite the criticism from some quarters, many supporters and football analysts still regard Ayew as an important figure due to his leadership qualities, experience and commitment to the national team. His supporters argue that his presence in the squad could help guide younger players and bring stability to the team during major competitions.

However, others share the view expressed by Coach Nimley, believing that the Black Stars must begin a new chapter by focusing on younger talents who can build the team for the future. The debate has intensified as discussions continue over the composition of the squad for upcoming international competitions, including the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

As Ghana prepares for future tournaments, the question of whether Andre Ayew should continue playing for the Black Stars remains a topic of intense discussion among football stakeholders, fans and analysts. While some believe his experience is still valuable, others insist that the time has come for the veteran forward to step aside and allow the next generation of players to lead the team into a new era.
